The concept of time can often seem mystical and complex for children. However, when they become clockmakers, time transforms from just a number into an adventure. This activity allows children to familiarize themselves with time through a creative process where each hour turns into an interesting story. It is a great opportunity not only to learn but also to play, providing the child with the chance to acquire important skills in a fun and engaging way.
At home, find some cardboard or thicker paper. Cut it into a circle, which will become the clock's base. Let the child choose their favorite pencils, markers, or colored paper to decorate the clock. Together, write the numbers 1 to 12 around the circle. Create the clock hands from cardboard or thicker paper, then attach them to the center of the clock with a pin or another sturdy object so that the hands can move.
Once the clock is ready, explain to the child how it shows hours and minutes. You can discuss what you usually do at certain times, for example, waking up at 7 AM or having breakfast at 8 AM. This is a great moment to create a story about a magical clock that opens doors to a new world every hour. Let the child turn the clock hands and see how the "worlds" change – perhaps at 3 PM they sail on a pirate ship, and at 6 PM they become jungle explorers.
Making a clock develops the child's understanding of time, improves motor skills, and encourages creativity. The child not only learns how a clock works but also enhances their mathematical thinking and ability to structure their day. Additionally, it's a fun activity that helps express ideas and engage in family life, all while spending quality time together.
